little things of 2019

Wow...this year whipped by! Time for me to reminisce about a few of the little things that made up 2019.
  • 2019 was a record year for me eating the most chocolate ever! Believe it or not, I actually got to a point where I was kind of sick of eating it! Can this really happen?
  • My nine-year-old granddaughter always keeps me on my toes. She recently asked me how old I was. When I told her she paused, scrutinized me carefully, and replied, "Well, I guess you don't look too bad then...."
  • On the other hand, my five-year-old grandson isn't concerned whatsoever about age. He wants to marry me. Does that melt your heart, or what?
  • Grocery stores are full of funny stories, or is it just us? Ange and I left our *almost full* grocery cart to walk back an aisle to pick up a forgotten item. No more than two minutes later our cart was no where to be seen. Ange finally spotted a woman wheeling our cart around. He said "Excuse me, but that's my cart." Incredulously, she looked at him and said, "Well if this is your cart, then where's my cart?" Ange answered "How am I supposed to know? I had trouble enough finding my own cart!" The funny part? Up comes her husband wheeling their grocery cart and it only had four items in it! How she could possibly confuse the two carts beats me. Is this what's called senior grocery shopping?
  • I was finally able to purchase 'Pigment of Imagination.' This daylily had been on my wish list for a long while. It's a morphing color-changer and I'm looking forward to seeing it bloom.
  • During August I traveled to England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Best time ever, and I loved absolutely everything! (Well, except maybe not the haggis.)
  • At work I received an award, and the awesomeness was that I was nominated by my coworkers.  Warm fuzzies :)
  • What started out as a gag gift turned into a must-have item. One member of our cards group is a super slow dealer (sorry, but it's true).  Just to be funny Ange got a battery-operated card shuffler at a garage sale for $1. Before long all six of us were all fighting over it! No worries...now I'm the proud owner of my very own card shuffler. Who knew?
  • Have any of you watched the HBO series "The Righteous Gemstones?" It takes family dysfunction to a new level - what a hoot!
  • Finally, I think it's worthy to note that no matter what is going on in your life, you can still find plenty of things to be grateful for if you are fortunate enough to own this day.

yard art at its best

Recently I passed by a home that had a ginormous resin cow in the front yard. The homeowner had tied a chain around the cow and wrapped the chain around a tree trunk with a padlock. Cows are big here in Wisconsin! This is yard art at its best!

You've all seen yard whimsy gone wild, yes? It's that yard that has one too many flamingos and somehow crosses the invisible line between tasteful and tacky. It stops you in your tracks to gape at in disbelief. Thoughts I ponder when I see yard whimsy gone wild:
  • How do the homeowners cut the grass? Clearly, in many cases, a lawnmower isn't an option. Do they just go around the entire yard with a weed-whipper?  I once saw a man on his hands and knees trimming his yard with a hand clipper so as not to disturb his yard art.
  • Can there be too much of a good thing?
  • Does the inside of the home resemble the whimsy-fest that's happening on the outside?
  • Rock on yard whimsy! Keep the smiles coming :) Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked and did the same thing?

Daylilies never fail to amaze me with all the different types of shapes, colors and sizes that are available. There is truly a daylily for everyone, no matter what your likes and dislikes are. Hybridizers are continually coming up with many unique cultivars as each year passes. Lately, I am particularly fascinated with the striped and spotted daylilies that are becoming popular. Hello wish list...

Pictured are just a few of the variations that grow in my garden.

jen melon

'Jen Melon' is one of my favorite old-school daylilies that is hardy and fuss-free. I got this melon-yellow daylily as a freebie when I bought another plant, and to be honest I actually liked Jen Melon better than the plant I purchased! This dormant diploid was hybridized in 1987 by Oakes Daylilies in Tennessee. Although registered at 26," my plant grows 32" tall.  The thick, waxy blooms are consistently 7" in size and hold up wonderfully in any kind of weather. A midseason-late bloomer, Jen Melon bloomed from July 19 through August 21 in my garden.

This pretty is also an American Daylily Society 2018 Honorable Mention award winner. This award is the first official 'stamp of approval' where good performance goes beyond the regional level.
