garage sale musings

Hundreds of my daylily scapes are up and ready-to-go. *Most* of the weeding is done. In the meantime, I've been having fun going to garage sales. While treasure hunting, I enjoy checking out the landscaping at people's homes. I like to see what they have planted and how they have it arranged. Garage sales give me permission to do that. Sometimes I see recurrent garage sale themes that I can't help smiling about. So here are my current musings:

While attending sales:
  1. I dare you - just try to read some of the yard sale signs while driving. Some are written so small that you have to be driving about 5 mph and be myopically close to actually read the address.
  2. Have you ever been to a garage sale that you haven't seen crutches?  Nope, us either.
  3. Children's Kool-Aid stands. Who doesn't love a jolt of Kool-Aid at 8:00 am?
  4. Do we really want to buy used underwear?
  5. Love the signs that say "You break it, you buy it." Did the sellers forget that they are trying to get rid of stuff they no longer want?

While having our own sale:
  1. Is it really necessary to write a check for a $1.00 item? Or how about trying to pay for a $3.00 purchase with a $100.00 bill?
  2. Was that lady really carrying a baby GOAT around? Yep, really--you can't make this stuff up.
  3. People who ask us if we can 'do better' on a 50 cent item--like 25 cents. Too funny!
  4. People who ask if they can use our bathroom. Or tell me their child has diarrhea and really needs to go bad.
  5. Taking bets on that one item that we have chosen as our "we can't sell this" item. Then trying really hard to sell it. Ange is SO skilled at this - he always wins.

All musings aside, Ange and I have really found some amazing things at garage sales. It's been the one constant in our lives since the day we met.

lollypops

These pretty Asiatic "Lollypop" lilies started blooming a few days ago in my garden. After the irises are done blooming the Asiatics bridge the gap until mid-July when the daylilies appear in full force. Lollypops are one of my earliest blooming Asiatic lilies. They grow between 2-3 feet tall and are hardy, dependable perennials. They are also great for cut-flower bouquets. These little darlings came from a plastic package at a big box store many moons ago. I believe $3.96 was the magic price for 4 Lollypop bulbs. They have happily multiplied and more than paid me back.

moonlit masquerade

Woo hoo! A few of my daylilies have started blooming. We had an unusual (for Wisconsin) 96 degree day last week that must have prompted the plants. "Moonlit Masquerade" opened beautifully a few days ago, even though it was only a 50-something degree morning. It's always one of my first bloomers.

Moonlit Masquerade has proven to be a reliable, consistent bloomer. It never disappoints me. The large 6" blooms are quite showy up close and from a distance. This cultivar was awarded the Stout Silver Medal  in 2004, the highest honor a daylily can get. I have enjoyed this plant for many years and there will always be a place for it in my garden.

My daylilies are HUGE this year due to all the rain. Looking at them now I really should have done a bit more dividing. Coming up...my favorite time of the year!

Daylily scapes are gradually popping up all over, but in the meantime I am totally enjoying my various iris plants. "Bewilderbeast" was one of my new purchases last fall and it didn't disappoint me. Definitely a keeper! In its first season it has proved to be a hardy grower, which I understand is not always the case for novelty flowers such as this.  I like the size (36" tall) so even after high winds it doesn't flop over. The flower has an amazing fragrance, and finally -- could it be any prettier? It's an award-winner for obvious reasons. A large clump of Bewilderbeast should prove to be quite stunning in the future. Looking forward to that!
